Coin George III Penny 1799
The George III Penny of 1799 is a from the era of the British Industrial Revolution and Georgian Britain. Minted during the reign of King George III (1760-1820), this copper penny reflects a time of immense change in Britain, marked by advances in industry, science, and colonial expansion. The coin itself was part of the "Cartwheel" series, named for its distinctive broad, thick appearance.
The 1799 penny bears the profile of George III on the obverse, with the Latin inscription "GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX" (George III, by the grace of God, King). On the reverse, it features Britannia seated, holding a trident and shield, a symbol of Britain’s naval strength and imperial ambition. What makes the 1799 penny particularly notable is that it was one of the first British coins to be struck in large quantities using industrialized process.
